If you’ve had a debt go to collections, it can feel like the end of the world. However, that’s far from the truth. You do, in fact, have the power to negotiate and work out a deal to handle the debt in collections. Here’s how to deal with collection agencies:

  • Find out if they’re the same company your original creditor sold your debt to — and make sure to get the name, phone number, and address to backcheck the company.
  • Do the same backchecking with the debt collections agency. Ask them who your original creditor was and how much you owe.
  • Don’t feel pressured to pay everything in full all at once. Work with them to set up a settlement or payment plan — as long as they see a good faith effort to pay, they are likely to work with you.
