The more information you provide when disputing an item on your credit report, the faster the entire process might be for you. Although it’s easier than ever to file a dispute online, here’s what the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends including in your dispute if you mail it in:
- Your name, address, and phone number.
- Any information about the mistake you can include, such as the account number, details about the account or item you’re disputing, and the reason why you’re disputing this account or item.
- A clear request of what you want to happen, such as if an account or item should be removed or simply updated with the correct information.
- A copy of your credit report with the account or item in dispute highlighted or somehow marked so that they can easily be seen.
