You’d be hard-pressed to find a college graduate these days that hasn’t had some experience with student loan debt. The question is, how much does the average person carry? According to The Institute for College Access and Success (TICAS), the average 2017 college graduate left school with $28,650 in student loan debt. But that number can vary quite a bit by state.

TICAS runs an annual report on how this debt varies by state. Using that data, we’ve compiled a list of the states in the U.S. where residents have the most student loan debt.
